Entrepreneurs’ Background And Business Modelling: A Review And Research Perspectives
Abstract:
Research on the effect of entrepreneurs’ background on business model selection is a relevant and timely topic within the field of entrepreneurship and business management. The relationship between an entrepreneur’s background and the decision-making processes, including business model selection, has gained significant attention in recent years. Investigating how an entrepreneurs’ prior experiences, skills and knowledge influence their approach to business model selection can provide valuable insights for both researchers and practitioners.
Results show that the drivers of business modelling studied by scholars are: entrepreneurial skills, entrepreneurs’ geographical location, entrepreneurs’ family characteristics, gender, entrepreneurs’ work experience, entrepreneurial education, entrepreneurs’ ties with social agents. Furthermore, the leading thematic areas of research in which scholars have focused are:
- the effect of the entrepreneurs’ background on business model (BM) selection with a focus on digital BMs, BM transparency and environmentally sustainable BMs;
- the effect of the entrepreneurs’ background on business model innovation (BMI);
- the effect of the entrepreneurs’ background on circular economy BM selection.
Understanding the impact of entrepreneurial background on business model selection can help identify patterns, factors, and mechanisms that contribute to successful or unsuccessful business models.
