Title: “Women’s labour market participation and its link with attitudes towards gender roles in the family”
Abstract:
Gender inequality in labour market participation is a widespread phenomenon in many countries. Studies in labour economics have aimed at understanding the determinants of women’s labour market participation, considering variables such as education, age and marital status, but rarely including “soft factors” such as attitudes and perceptions.
This study aims to study the link between the change in attitudes towards gender roles in the households and changes in women’s employment status. To do so, we apply a hybrid choice model to 11 waves of the UK Household Longitudinal Study (UKHLS), a representative sample of over 40,000 households across the UK. We demonstrate the role of traditional variables such as presence of children and household income, as well as how attitudes towards gener role reinforce or dampen the role of such “hard” factors.
